Halle (Saale) is renowned for its extensive green spaces, covering 15.9% of the city—the highest in Germany. Yet, despite its rich urban forest, no comprehensive map of individual trees exists beyond the Baumkataster, which documents only ~40,000 trees. To bridge this data gap, we are using AI and multispectral sensors to map and analyze the city’s trees like never before. Using high-resolution aerial and drone images, our project has successfully mapped over 700,000 trees. With the help of DeepTrees, an advanced AI model, we can identify individual trees, measure their crown size, and estimate their health across years.
In this presentation, we will show participants our tools and our map of trees in Halle. We hope to engage citizens to support sustainable urban planning, ensuring that Halle’s rich natural heritage continues to thrive for future generations
